Fishing Report #24

11/07/07

Hello Night "Eyes":

The "Eyes" have it!  At night that is. Back to back limit catches on Sat. and Sun. evening have now set the pace for the rest of Nov.  That magic temperature of 54 degrees Fahrenheit has finally been triggered.  The lake is now at 52 degrees and dropping. This will bring the shad shore bound and the walleyes in chase during the crepuscular period.  That word is worth looking up!

On Sat., Mike Haefele, Pat Mahardy, and Connor Brazell a former excellent calculus student of mine fished with me for some perch and walleye. We spent the early part of the outing jigging for yellow perch with the Mad River Sports white sonar and Bass Pro Shops  XPS LAZER Blade gold pattern in 10 to 14 feet and found concentrations of perch on the weed edges. Two bonus walleyes also came to the boat as Mike and Connor obliged with their jigging technique.

By 4:30 P.M. a stiff NW wind made the perch drift difficult to handle so I decided to head to Shaks Pt. where we would be protected from the wind and set up for the evening walleye visit. At 6:22 P.M. Pat caught the first walleye of the night bite using a black/chrome Bass Pro Shops XPS Lazer Eye Nitro Suspend Minnow pheromone enhanced with Mustad's Activate and by 7:20 P.M. they had their limit and I had mine. These walleyes were loaded with shad.

On Sun. evening Dr. Ed Mills, professor and director of the Cornell University Biological Field Station at Shackleton Point on Oneida Lake joined me with his son John and friend Tim Jasmin from Chittenango for yet another evening of my version of the "nightcast". After setting up at his home base Shaks. Pt., I decided after about five casts that this was not the place to stay...too quiet, too calm, too clear. What little wind we had I needed to put to our advantage so I revved up the Yamaha a headed to Larkin Point. and dropped the hook in 4.3 feet.

I'm beginning to believe walleyes can tell time!  At 5:22 P.M. Tim  caught the first walleye with you know what (XPS). This was right on time with the previous evening...we were now back to standard time. By 7:15 P.M. they had their limit of nine eyes. Some of which had shad in their bellies. As you would expect, the Dr. caught the largest at 20 3/8 inches. On the right side of the photo is a good shot of the XPS in blue/chrome.The line is Berkley Fireline Crystal (which is the only superline with the invisibility property) and the lure is connected with a Bass Pro Shops # 1 fast lock red snap.

The late season fishing is some of the best you can experience for both perch and walleye. This is when they are at their peak size and when we find them they are generally concentrated along the lake's structure. Which by the way is available in lat./Lon/depth enabled maps by Underwater Technologies. I have a link to their site on mine.

I still have some openings if you are interested in a late season "fishfest".
