Fishing Report #23

11/20/06

Hello to all my "reel" friends:

Time for yet another fish'in missive from this side of the pond. Let's begin with the most recent outings.  On Saturday evening Capt. Uncle Donnie Dagata, Capt. Mike (Miguel) Conroy and I celebrated the opening of the southern tier deer season by fishing for walleyes on Oneida. Can you imagine, three charter capts. in the same boat?   If the deer where moving during the day as much as the walleyes were at night then I would assume all those who hunt had their share of does and bucks within sight. It was the second of two back to back nights with limits of walleyes. The water temp. has been holding at 46 degrees Fahrenheit and old marble eyes are sensing the onset of winter. It's time to continue building body fat for the "big chill".

Right now, the eyes are feasting on gizzard shad and you best be set up by 4:45 P.M. the latest. First the shad show up then the walleyes oblige. The strong bite is from 4:55 - 5:30 P.M. and then it's a matter of finding the more gluttonous ones or the later arrivals. Here is a shot of a fresh shad I found in a walleye's stomach. No signs of deterioration...so this walleye had just arrived for his last meal. I guess you could say dessert in the form of an XPS Bass Pro Shops Suspend Lazer Eye minnow killed em.

On Friday evening John Lamb and father-in-law Dave Shults (Utica, NY) and I also boated our limits of "eyes". Same scenario same results. Of course the lures are coated with Mustad's famous fish catching elixir "Ultrabite". Which by the way is available at Bass Pro Shops in Auburn. John had been trying for two years to "hook up" with me for an evening walleye gig and got weathered out several times. His patience definitely paid off.

Dick Williams, (Auburn, NY), his friend Judy, daughter Cindy and her husband Mike also had their way with the walleyes. Prior to the walleye bite they practiced their angling skills on a few pickerel and a perch which we released. By the time the eighth walleye hit the deck they decided to head back to the barn even though the eyes were still biting and on the prowl. Their catch consisted mostly of eighteen inch+ walleyes with bulging bellies.

Well it appears we are going to have a decent weather week ahead. This will definitely keep me on the water past Thanksgiving. If any of you would like to add some walleye to your turkey or venison then you might like to fill in on a walleye night bite. At this time in the season I am putting individuals together to fill an outing. Let me know if you want to be on a will call list for a late season walleye charter.

O'fish'ally yours,
