Fishing Report #18

Angleroids, anglerettes, anglertots, et. al.:

Me again, with yet another fishing missive for the masses. Salmon, salmon, everywhere and not a winner yet. The 2008 version of the LOC derby is not officially over until 1:00 P.M. Sept. 1, Labor Day. This years' king salmon are averaging 20+ lbs. and I expect the winning fish to come in at 36 to 37 lbs. Well the NY State Fair is in its final weekend, college semesters have begun, and most importantly "Chinook and Coho " salmon are now a daily visit to the waters outside of Oswego Harbor. This is the time of the season that the salmon come to us. They are on their final trek to the tributaries where they were either stocked or naturally hatched. Although by now, many salmon stomachs have atrophied they will still strike our baits instinctively and also out of aggression. It's time to slow down the troll and use the intrusive baits. Larger attractors and longer fly leads, J-Plugs, Rattle Baits, Hot'n'Tots etc.

As the water temperature drops to the mid 60's expect these staging kings and cohos to enter Oswego Harbor as they prepare for their annual run up stream. In the meantime we continue to enjoy the lake bite as you can see from our catches.

Johnnie Rudisill and his grandfather Tony Milazzo from Stamford, CT come every August to visit Tony's daughter, Terri Boyzuk in Fulton and to fish for king salmon. They rarely come without catching their limit. This is an impressive rack of salmon and a brown trout.

Al Rice, Steven Rice Jim Allen and Johnnie Herring all from NYC make their annual trek to Oswego every Aug. and you can see why. Here is a full rack of Kings and browns all caught on attractors and A-TOM-MIK flies. The biggest was just under 30 pounds. I might add we did this in 5 to 6 foot seas. Just watch this video and you will "SEA" what I mean http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgQ9BdgHyk8 .

It was remarkable to go 10 for 10 in that kind of sea...truly a testimonial to their angling abilities.

Mark Lajoie, Steve Southworth both with BorgWarner and John Lacombe and Shawn Waggoner with Mitten Corp. had their hands full with these salmon at Oswego. We caught these kings on A-TOM-MIK flies (Big Fin Glo & Hammer Glo) with SmartFish attractors in 100 to 200 feet of water.

In closing here are two outstanding kings. Greg West with the local US attorneys office boated this 30lb. king salmon last Sunday and Scott Giovannone from Utica, NY landed our largest of the season...a 32 lb. feisty one that took twenty minutes to land on a dipsy diver application.

It is clearly an Oswego "king"dom and you can be part of the action. I had a cancellation come in for Sept. 2, Tues. afternoon from 1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. If any of you are interested in picking up this date either as a private charter or as a group of individuals willing to share the cost and share a common interest..."king me"  call me at (315) 427-2278 or send me a high speed, low trajectory email.
