Fishing Report #18

07/20/06

Hello to my friends ashore, afloat, and "awaiting" a fishing report:

So sorry for the long delay between report 17 and this one. The new boat and the walleye fishing on Oneida lake required every minute of my time. Finally I have Bandito III, looking and functioning up to specs. All of you who are scheduled for charters on Ontario and those of you who are planning to charter will absolutely love the ride and the equipment. We are even capable of running the microwave and stove while we are fishing.

Bandito III has been performing admirably as of late. On Sunday, Phil Roe (Deer Processor/Landscaper) Hamilton, NY with his son Danny, and guests Ken Kunkel (Madison County Clerk) and octogenarian Joe had a busy morning with the browns. They boated 12, kept 9 and lost 9 others. We fished from 4 mile point to the high rocks at Nine Mile point in 70 to 80 feet of water. The R&R froggy spoon and the Michigan Stinger froggy spoon were are prime time players fished at 65 feet and stacked at 60. Downriggers, outriggers with copper, and wire dipsys all fired consistently.

Here is Ken with his 16 pound brown...his biggest ever!

The salmon fishing has been spotty. The difference between this season and last is salmon have been on the move all season whereas last year they staged early in July and never left within 10 miles of the harbor in any direction. Of course we did have colder water near shore for most of July in 2005. This year the temperature profile has kept the thermocline deeeeeeeeeeep!   Quite often we have had to fish 120+ feet below.

On the second day of our tournament, Team Buffa did manage to find a nice catch of salmon in 120 to 320 feet of water on a North/South troll in front of Sithe Energies at 4 mile point. ProTroll e-chips and Assassin R&R attractors fished with ATomik flies (silver hammer and TG) as well as little boy blue and mirage Mad River Sports flies. We fished with 165 to 180 feet of cable with 15 pound Shark weights at 3.2 mph to generate the strikes.

If you are contemplating a trout and salmon charter for Aug. or Sept. It is imperative you get to me soon. The remaining dates are going swiftly.

Those of you who fish from their own vessels. Have a safe and successful salmon season. Check my web site for reports and fishing information. http://www.captaintonybuffafishingcharters.com
