Fishing Report #17

08/19/08

Fishers, Fisherettes, et. al.

Let the "SALMON FEST" begin!  I mentioned in the last fishing report that August 15 was a pivotal date for salmon to return to the near shore waters at Oswego. Well they have not reneged...they are here as promised and they are averaging above twenty pounds. Last year's average was seventeen pounds and thus far it appears that this year's salmon have been feasting on alewives and most likely the round goby.  E-chips, Smart Fish, and Jensen 00 dodgers fished with the A-TOM-MIK Big Fin Glo and Hypnotist flies have been lighting up the rods. Brown trout continue to be an option as well as a secondary catch while trolling for the kings.

Dennis & Sylvie Canprone, Woodstock, CT. and Rosie and Paul Brieding, Hebron CT. spent a morning trolling for browns and were rewarded with a respectable catch including a 15 lb. bruiser.

On August 13 Huey and Kelly Brown, Jamesville, NY  hooked into a matching pair of kings; Kelly however claimed hers was bigger and we all agreed!

On August 13 in the afternoon Doug White from Moravia, NY brought his guests, Ramon Mendoza, Huntington Beach, CA, dad Ramon, Escondido, CA, Martin White, MN. and Don White also of Huntington Beach for a salmon outing. They especially enjoyed the action since all salmon fishing from the coast of California to Oregon is closed due to depleted stocks. As you can see the afternoon provided enough action to give each one a salmon.

On August 16, Bob Herman, Albany, son Scott Herman, Chuck Burger, Oswego, Brian Klefbeck, Oswego, Lyle Sharkey, Fulton and Eric Burger, Oswego managed the bumpy seas with a very nice catch of kings. This was Eric's pre nuptial fishing outing. He is the groom to be in two weeks. Catch the action during this outing at my You Tube account. The title of the video is An A-TOM-MIK Moment with the Big Fin Glo Fly. http://www.youtube.com/user/capntonyb Click on the video that is grouped with the other six rather than on the one featured at the top. This will give you the option to "view in high quality" for a much sharper image.

As you can see, the salmon have arrived. It looks like a nice stretch of weather is on the way; which means the water profile will stabilize and the salmon will continue to entertain. If you are contemplating a charter I still have openings in Sept.
