Fishing Report #17

06/24/07

Hello sportfishing fans:

Time for another peek at a week of fishing. Cold fronts are not exactly the order of the day during the first weekend of summer but that's what we contended with on Sat. and Sun.  Well we all know what "tough love" is and those of us who fish definitely know what a "tough bite" is.  Besides the severity of the wind on Sat. we also had to deal with a drop in surface temperature of 8 degrees Fahrenheit. As it turned out, it would have been more productive to work on the landscape around the house then to deal with stubborn fish.

Now that we're on the topic of landscapes. Local award winning, certified landscape nurseryman and traveled angler Jim Sollecito was with me earlier in the week with his guests, dentist Bob Clark, Baldwinsville and SU/international basketball star Roosevelt Bouie. Rosie graciously accepted Jim's invitation to join us on an evening Oneida lake charter. The bite was active, the conversation informative and now we know more about european/american basketball than most. This photo, and " the rest of the story" will be featured on Channel 9 TV at 5:42 A.M. this coming Friday.

Deep walleyes were the targets for Mike Failing his dad Don from Hamilton, NY and Jason Falcone, Syracuse. We found these "eyes" in 32 feet on the famous Oneida lake "pancakes" (manganese iron concretions) just south of buoy 113. We actually boated 13 to keep 10 and every walleye came on the 3/4 oz perch pattern jig dressed with a nightcrawler. Just a deliberate hippity hop motion was sufficient to trigger the strike.

Jim Hatch of Gypsum Wholesalers, Solvay, NY and guests had a potpourri of fun on Friday as the leading edge of the cold front made its way into central NY. We spent the morning in the weeds tossing spinners and worms. The action was very steady with 6 largemouth bass, 8 pickerel, 6 walleyes and a variety of panfish. Most of the fish were released except of course for the legal size walleyes, the largest bass and one pickerel.

I will spend the better part of this week on Lake Ontario. So prepare yourselves for a lake Ontario missive by the week's end.

Have a "reely" good time,
