CAPTAIN TONY BUFFA FISHING CHARTERS
Fishing Report #16 08/12/08
Again hello fishters, fishterettes, et. al.: Another week and the anticipation heightens as we await this year's version of August Kings. It continues to be more brown trout while we wait for the big arrival of king Salmon. Schools of both mature and immature salmon have eluded us thus far through July and early August. Typically our August catches are replete with both mature and juvenile salmon. The kings are way over due. We remain optimistic since a king salmon can travel 50 miles in a twenty four hour period. NYSDEC has confirmed that with telemetry tracking. The "break-out" day is not far off. Generally by August 15 the kings have found us and vice versa. In the meantime browns and a few salmon have kept us smiling.
Withro Wiggins, retired OCC mathematics professor and former colleague of mine, along with Warren Darby, Onondaga County Undersheriff and Herb Wiggins, Onondaga County deputy sheriff who is also my web master, put their angling skills to the test on Lake Ontario with a nice catch of browns and a 23 lb. king salmon. We trolled in 95 to 200 feet of water to find these fish. Herb's king took a silver E-chip and an A-TOM-MIK mirage fly. Watch the action of this catch on You Tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW6pHXjit2o
How about this trophy Steelhead caught by Gary Chabot of Ithaca, NY! Hang on because when these rockets strike it's a frenetic fight from start to finish. We were in 300 feet of water off Ford Shoals trolling attractors and flies when this 14 lb. steelhead hit a dipsy diver application with a mint green Smart Fish and a TG fly.
Another monster brown ( 14 pounds) made it to the net when Ross Berlin (VP of Player's Relations with the PGA) took time out from planning for this year's event at Turning Stone and visited Lake Ontario at Oswego to enjoy the quality fishing available in central NY. That's a Michigan Stinger Tuxedo Spoon hanging from the fish's' mouth. Ross's dad Chuck likewise got into the brown trout action as well. We found these browns off of Nine Mile West in 45 to 65 feet. The spoons of choice were Michigan Stingers and R&R alewife series.
When the fishing gets tough, fish tougher, cap'n tony
