CAPTAIN TONY BUFFA FISHING CHARTERS
Fishing Report #14 08/07/09
Hello again from shore bound and wind whipped cap'n tony: Strong W by NW winds have kept me and my crews landlocked now for the third consecutive day. Clearly a boon to the sail boaters and not a blessing to the fishing fleet.Time to organize and inventory the cabin, change the oil and ruminate about the fishing ahead. Browns and salmon have been the better part of our recent catches prior to the "big blow". Here we go with some salmon pictures. Jimmy Williams, Jimmy DeRito and Brad Bryan all from Syracuse, NY along with Gary Wood, Cicero, NY got in on the salmon action out of Oswego. These mint silver kings came from 180 to 300 FOW fished at depths of 100 to 120 on the riggers and 330 on the wire dipsys. A combination of the Legendary Smart Fish and A-TOM-MIK flies particularly the Crazy Bitch and the Big Fin Glo accounted for the action.
Team Buffa once again competed in the Little Salmon River Challenge and placed 30th. out of a field of 90 boats. This was a six fish weigh-in and we fell shy of the mark with four large salmon and a seven pound steelhead. With two hours remaining from noon to 2:00 P.M. we were confident that we would boat a couple more large salmon but that was not the case. Not another strike in the last two hours. This catch came in 400 to 500 FOW fishing down 80 to 100 feet. The A-TOM-MIK TG fly with the white/mountain dew Smart Fish took the lion's share of the strikes. Frank DeGenero, Capt. Paul Nagle, Dick Culkin, Chuck Nojaim and other team participants Bob Boehlert and Uncle Donnie D'Agata not in the photo enjoyed the event and will be there for the next one.
When the salmon either get obstinate or take the express to parts unknown it's Brown Trout time. As you can see from the catches, the browns have provided an entertaining option. This was all family day. Grandpa Rick George from Liverpool, NY took his grandchildren Maya, Miles, Ella, Eden and Gabe on a lake Ontario adventure. These kids had an amazing time with the brown trout bite. When we got back to shore dad Rick George Jr. and Jodell, grandpa's wife were elated to see that the kids had a memorable experience.
When Pat Moore and son Dan rolled into town from Duluth, MN, mom (Katie) suggested that they book a fishing trip with Capt. Tony Buffa her Calculus prof. when she attended OCC in 1983. Her son Dan is a math wizard who had a perfect SAT math score and is now a junior in college majoring in mathematics. I guess the calculus lessons were worth it! At any rate, Katie's brother Jerry Brislin, Liverpool, NY contacted me and the threesome had a blast with "bruiser browns". A thirteen, eleven, and eight pounder topped the limit catch.
When the wind subsides (tomorrow) we will once again do battle with lake Ontario's salmonids. I have a few remaining dates in Aug. so if you are contemplating a charter on the big pond CALL NOW FISH LATER! This is "REEL" love,
cap'n tony
