Fishing Report #12

07/16/09

Hello all my fishers, fishettes, et. al.:

Sometimes it is just compelling to issue yet another fishing report. The urgent nature of course is the July arrival of big kings. Bass Pro Managers Rob Barber, Gary Prince, Mark Kratz, Trevor Mason a fishing dept. associate, and Bob Ryan, manager spent a very active morning with me on lake Ontario at Oswego. We left the dock at  6:20 A.M. this morning and by 11:00 A.M. the tally was 11 hookups with 9 salmon in the dead well. Two hundred to three hundred feet of water with riggers set at 160, 150, 145, copper at 600 feet, the new "Wonder Set" dipsy conversion by Legendary Products fished as down and outs off the riggers and the standard dipsy at 330 feet at a number 1.5 setting kept every position active.

The new 20 # Shark weights, now available at A-TOM-MIK truly showed their performance at these extreme depths, minimizing cable angle and allowing for a more efficient approach to protracted deep fishing. Additionally the A-TOM-MIK "Crazy Bitch" fly fished at these extreme depths accounted for the majority of our strikes in 0 % light.  At 160 down on my Cannon Temp unit I had 48 degrees Fahrenheit and kept close to that with the other riggers. For more info on the day's catch, visit the mangers at Bass Pro in Auburn and they will fill you in on more details. That's Bob Ryan with a 24 # king taken on the 600 copper.

Typically by mid-July our king fishery out of Oswego rivals that of anywhere on the lake. It is here to stay and for you to enjoy. So if you haven't booked your salmon outing for 2009 "SEAS" the day, CARPE the KING, and have the fun.

On Oneida the bass bite continues to appeal to the inshore minded whereas if you are looking for "eyes" go deep. Trollers are having their way with the walleyes in 36 to 42 feet on the east end. Jiggers are working harder to get a handful. Herb Wiggins, Onondaga County deputy sheriff and dad Withro got in on the bass action. Herb is my web designer and administrator. You can find him at http://www.herbwiggins.com . His dad Withro is a colleague of mine in the OCC math. dept.

Rick Hall, B'Ville, NY, Joshua and John Qualls, Carmel IN, and father-in-law Bob Jones, B'Ville, NY love their walleye fishing. A combo of jig and a worm along with the 3/4 oz. Mad River Vertical Jigging blade accounted for the catch. Joshua the youngest member of the crew at 12 yrs. old caught the biggest eye at 23 inches.

And finally, Fred and son Rick Wozniak of Howlett Hill Rd., Syracuse, NY winners of the Jim Sollecito Landscape and Nursery Education weekend fishing trip give away with Capt. Tony Buffa at his annual spring Education Seminar had a great evening of father/son fishing recreation. Rick got to catch his first ever walleye while dad kept us entertained with his fishing and hunting exploits.  It's nice to see a father and son with core family values enjoying time together. A special thanks to Jim Sollecito for providing the charter.

Here are my open days left in July for either an Oneida or Ontario outing. July 20, 21, 22, 27, 30, 31.  On July 25 Team Buffa along with 100+ other teams will compete in the Little Salmon River Challenge hosted by Beth and Mike D'Alonzo of Mike's Marine in Texas, NY on the Little Salmon River. The entry fee is $50.00 per team, dinner ticket is $10.00 and the big fish award contest is $10.00. Entries must be purchased at Mike's Marine. This year's event is stacking up to be spectacular with the number of adult salmon around. One of my team members is unable to make the outing which lasts from 5:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. so I need another team member. If you are interested in joining my team the cost is $ 140.00 for the day of fishing and that includes everything except the tip for the mate.

Have a "Fish"tastic summer,
