Fishing Report #9

06/24/10

Hello again my community of fishers, fishettes, fisholescenses, et. al.:

Another week, another catch, another report, and life continues in the fish lane! Well to put it in plain terms, the Oneida puzzle continues to challenge me and others. Simply cannot put together back to back good outings. Walleyes are not staying put. One day they are deep the next day they are gone to the shallows. One day they bite the next they just sit there. Add to this an abundance of fry (yellow perch and walleye) and you have all the pieces of the puzzle minus the wind/weather.

Despite the frustrations we have managed to fit in a good outing here and there. Last Fri., June 18, Capt. Mike Decker of Whitecap Charters out of Fairhaven, NY on Lake Ontario treated his dad, Bob, son, Mike, and first mate Ron to an Oneida lake charter for walleyes; and they got what they wanted. On this outing we boated 19 eyes to keep 15. Bob at 86 years young boated his limit and never put the rod down during the six hours. Again it was the XPS Lazer Blade gold, 1/2 oz. by Bass Pro Shops.

On Tues. morning June 22, Wayne Seybold, Marcellus, NY, Tom Merrill, B'Ville, NY, Tom Dodson, Clark Mills, NY, Pat Mahardy of AXA Advisors, Syr., NY and Tim Murphy of Canastota, boated 9 walleyes to keep 8. The highlight of this catch was three eyes over 20 inches. Two measured at 21 1/2 and another at 22 inches. Again the XPS blade out fished other applications.

Back on Tues., June 15, Brad Clark launched his 18' Tracker at the South Shore Launch off route 31 at 6:00 A.M. Shortly after he called me and I told him to join me at buoy 119 where I had found a cooperative school of eyes. After his first drift without a hit on the jig and worm he asked what we were using. Of course the answer was XPS Lazer Blade. He didn't have any. After a short visit port to port I armed him with three of my favorite color (gold) and the rest is "fishtory"! He and his guest limited and Brad within 15 min. of our rendezvous boated this 26 1/2 "eye"buster. If he looks familiar to you it's because he and his wife are in fishing report #7 with their and my limit of eyes.

Did manage to squeeze a Lake Ontario outing in on Sat., June 19, with Phil Roe, deer processor extraordinaire from Hamilton, NY, Sherriff Allen Riley, Madison, County and retired police chief Jim Tible, Hamilton. They boated six fish to keep four. These were all young salmon and one rainbow. The bigger kings are on the way. As of a few days ago, reports out of Sodus told tales of big kings and steelhead.
