CAPTAIN TONY BUFFA FISHING CHARTERS
Fishing Report #7 06/01/09
Fishers, Fishettes, Fisholescenes, & Fishinfants: Another missive: two ponds, cool water species, warm water species, cold weather, mucho wind and anglers aplenty. Despite the wind, rain, and cold I have managed to keep a busy May. Most recently its been more Oneida than Ontario. So let's start with the little "o" in reverse chronology. On Sun. morning, May 31, I met Bob Reilly, his wife Melissa, two boys Robbie and Ricky, brother John, and father-in-law Jim at 8:00 A.M. at Fremac Waterfront for an Oneida outing. The wind was howling out of the west so off we went to the west end of Briggs Bay (South Shore Launch). Bass, pickerel, and panfish kept everyone on fish. Plastic worms (whacky style) and Beetle Spins are all we needed. Here are the two boys with their first ever pickerel. Both boys tagged their pickerel on the spinner baits in the weeds.
On a cool Sat. morning, May 30, Walter Schneck of Schnecksville, PA, (you got that right, named after the Schneck's after they singlehandedly wrestled the village from the British during the Revolutionary War), John Ramey, Pottstown, PA and Rich Schneck also Pottstown and I headed to buoy 119 in search of the nomadic walleye.. Not sure about the origin of the town's name but thought my comment would make fodder for an historian. Our first pass, armed with the black and purple bucktail jig enhanced with a nightcrawler produced five walleyes with four over 15 inches. Then the "sheep" showed up. Sheep as in whitecaps. The drift, even with four drogues in the water was way too fast. So we opted for cover in DelMarter Bay and in 15 to 13 feet we found walleyes, bass, panfish. Now they wanted the Bass Pro Shops XPS LAZER Blade/gold 1/2 ounce. In there we managed 8 more walleyes with half of them over 15 inches. You can see the two lures to the far left and right of the photo.
On Thurs., May 28 it was Oneida again with Jim Ambrose and Earl Hilts from Baldwin Hall, Syracuse, NY and their guests Dan Carman, and Rick Davis from Huhtamaki, Fulton, NY. I called this one a "tough love bite". Five walleyes, one burbot, one pumpkinseed, three yellow perch and four tired jigging elbows. Again it was buoy 119 for the harvest. The one consistent factor in Oneida's walleye fishery is the inconsistency. Don't depend on yesterday's success to predicted tomorrow's approach.
Ontario continues to provide excellent to superb brown trout fishing. Here are left to right Lew Chillot,Roseto PA Jim Payner, Wind Gap PA Tony Reduzzi,Bangor PA Andy Chillot, Pen Argyl PA and kneeling Micheal Reduzzi, Bangor PA with a full rack and then some of browns. This was there first time with us and they will be back again. Boards and riggers loaded with the new R&R Slim Profile trolling spoons found at http://www.mytacklebox.com took the lions share of this catch.
Expect the walleyes to school through June and more salmon to show at Oswego. My July, Aug. and Sept. calendar has holes and there are a few days left in June. If you are contemplating a charter "SEAS" the day.
Best Fishes, cap'n tony
