CAPTAIN TONY BUFFA FISHING CHARTERS
Fishing Report #5 05/21/09
Fishing Friends, "Fin"atics, A"fish"ianados, et. al.: Hopefully your fishing efforts have culminated in rewarding catches. I can say my Lake Ontario experiences as well as my clients have been remarkably satisfying with limits of brown trout. On the other pond which I affectionately call "home" because it was where it all began for me; I can only share my frustration. Oneida lake walleyes continue to be obstinate, tight lipped, and downright challenging to catch. The window and location for the day to day walleye bite has been quite narrow at best. Some claim the water is too cold, others that the lake is loaded with too much bait. I don't subscribe to the cold or bait hypotheses...why did the walleyes bite so well this winter? As for too much bait, why do most of the walleyes that we catch have empty bellies? Why do I mark so many bottom oriented fish in that 24 to 34 feet range and get very few takers. At this point in the season I have more questions than answers. Perhaps June will bring on the usual easy jig bite. At this point it's a fish as you wish proposition and just keep at it. The pattern for browns has been quite consistent out of Oswego. Go east or west and hang in 7 to 20 feet with a mix of sticks and spoons fished mostly in the upper column from the surface down to 5 feet. Troll from 2 to 3 mph depending on calm or windy conditions. Last Thursday, Sean Berry, Albany, NY, Frank Mazzuca, Lockport, NY both with Graybar Electric were guests of Scott Ferguson, Albany, NY and Lynne Cohen, Rochester, NY both of PNT Technologies. The weather was cold and occasionally wet but the fishing was hot. Here is Lynne and Frank doubled and the foursome with their limit of browns. On Monday of this week Mike Hammershcmidt, Marcellus, NY with ING Financial, Patrick Lynch, Liverpool, NY with Diversified Wealth Strategies, John Driscoll, Philly, PA with Fidelity Investment and Chris Keegan, Liverpool, NY also with Diversifed Wealth Strategies got in on the brown trout action and weathered the cold to experience the hot brown bite. Again a limit catch! Again a limit catch! Here are some R&R spoons in the Slim Profile model that have been working. From top to bottom we have the Chartreuse Shad, Froggy, Black Shad & Orange Copper Black Dots.
