CAPTAIN TONY BUFFA FISHING CHARTERS
Fishing Report #3 04/19/09
Hello all my fisheads: The season has begun and in good fashion. Brown seems to be the color as in Salmo trutta (brown trout) a transplant from Europe and Asia. Apparently they like their home in the U.S. particularly in Lake Ontario at Oswego. On both my Saturday and Sunday outings limit catches highlighted the day. Most of the trolling time was spent in under ten feet with plenty of action off the Otter boards with Smithwick Rattlin Rogues, black/silver, firetiger, R&R spoons in the alewive series and Michigan Stingers chicken wing model. Ten to fifteen knots out of the NW kept the warmer water tucked close to shore on Saturday and provided a nice troll to the east from Four Mile Point to the Bible Conference. At one point during Saturday morning's charter we came to the assistance of a 24 feet Penn Yan that lost power due to a fire in the wiring harness. Luckily their anchor held in 3.5 feet. My Penn Yan a 29.9 feet model with half tunnels has a 1.5 feet draft so we were able to come to the rescue. Use this link to see the video of my crew catching a brown while in tow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gISo--p9KD0 Darryl Raate, Fulton who is not visible in the picture, John Chilinski, Syracuse, N.Y, High Noon Chess champ and first place winner in the March Syracuse Open along with Don Churchill, Cicero, NY,retired athletic director Corcoran HS and Denny Ferris, Liverpool, NY, caterer of our Mustad Challenge fishing tournament enjoyed the limit of browns and aided in the boat rescue.
On Sunday the wind shifted to the NE at about 15 knots and held the temperature on the shoreline for two consecutive days. The results were the same with a nice limit of browns. Phil Roe, Hamilton, NY deer processor and smoked meats specialist along with Ken Kunkel, Madison County Clerk, Shedds, NY boated fifteen fish released nine and kept their limit of browns. Again we spent the morning in ten feet and under with plenty of action on the surface.
The season has started as expected with quality fishing. As I look at my calendar for next week I have an open date on Thurs., April 23 and Sun., April 26. If you're interested in a trout charter let me know. I can even fit individuals together. I'll need at least five anglers at $100.00/person to cover an outing. Mark your calendars for this year's annual meeting of the Oneida Lake Association which will be at CNS HS on Monday, April 27 at 6:00 P.M. May the "fish" be with you,
cap'n tony
