CAPTAIN TONY BUFFA FISHING CHARTERS
Fishing Report #2 01/30/07
Hello again to my fish'in frenz, near and afar: The icecap has finally formed on Oneida Lake and I understand the fish have been a bit obstinate. A few walleyes catches to note have surfaced topside the ice at North Bay and the panfish have been spotty at Big Bay. I did notice a few fisherman on the south end of Caz. but have no report from there. Rumor has it that the safest and best ice fishing is at Sandy pond for yellow perch, crappie, bluegills and northerns...minnows for the perch and northerns; spikes or mousies for the crappie and bluegills. Of course all of this info is second hand. I cut my last hole in the ice in 1991, my first hole in 1975 and probably cut enough holes to sink the Queen Mary. Now my winters are complete with chess, reading, teaching mathematics at OCC and presenting fishing seminars. My next presentation will be this coming Sat., Feb. 3 at Bass Pro Shops in Auburn, NY. I will elaborate on the summer salmon fishery for Lake Ontario. Topics will include: leadcore, wire dipsy diver applications, copper (the latest craze in salmon trolling), cutbait techniques, and the importance of monitoring speed, temp and light penetration. To that end, I will be presenting the Cannon speed, temp and light meter at the weight. Last season I worked with this unit and found it to be reliable, accurate, dependable and worthy of performance with as much as 140 feet of coated cable in the water. Retired OCC math. professors, Dick Hartt, Arlan Hedges and Bruce Haney, former colleagues and good friends spent an afternoon in mid-August reminiscing while anticipating their first encounter with a lake caught salmon. Retirement has weathered well for them and although they no longer calculate in the classroom they can "count" on having a good time aboard the "BANDITO III".
Here is the schedule of my winter seminars:
