Fishing Report #07

05/08/12

Hello my fishtastic friends:
Two ponds, two stories, same ending (limit catches)! Sometimes it's just easy. Spring 2012 will go down in the fish log as a record setting year for the fish per hour catch rate. No angst, no pressure, just go fishing and the fish will catch you. It seems that way especially on the big "O". Now, I have only had one effort on the little "o" so far, but it also resulted in a limit catch, so it might be presumptuous of me to step out on a wave and declare Oneida to be a walleye yielding benefactor to all of its anglers. Time will tell and I am optimistic that it will be very good.
At any rate, take a look at these results. On Saturday, May 5, Jim Anthis, Jamesville, NY, Rick Garcea, Syracuse, NY, Louie Kruth, Cazenovia, NY, Steve Goldberg, Manlius, NY and John Viaeu, Jamesville, NY put on a jigging seminar in Maple Bay. Bucktail jigs (Mad River Sports), perch and sand pike pattern along with Bass Pro Shops XPS Lazer Blades, firetiger and gold were all they needed to apply their skills. A total of 15 "eyes", 1 pickerel, 1 yellow perch and a sheepshead kept the crew entertained and smiling. Three walleyes over 20 inches highlighted the catch.

The bonanza continues on Lake Ontario. Kings, lakers, browns and an occasional Atlantic come together for the "perfect storm" of fishing. This season, beyond all others is stacking up to be one of the best on record for the abundance of king salmon and browns. It doesn't seem to matter much on he presentation. Either a spoon diet or an assortment of attractors and flies will suffice. Notably, Michigan Stringers, R&R spoons, and Atomik flies behind E-Chips or Spin Doctors will make your trolling worthwhile.
Kevin Champney, Verona, NY and Ret. Major John Williams, Syracuse, NY spent a productive morning catching kings, lakers and browns at Oswego on Lake Ontario. They released most of what was caught and kept a few for the grill.

On Sunday, May 6, Phil Roe, Hamilton, NY, the biggest deer processor in Madison county, Dr. Jay Levy, Baldwinsville, NY and Capt. Darryl Raate, Fulton, NY managed a limit of kings and a lake trout in just 2 1/2 hours of trolling while on the Bandito III with Capt. Tony Bufa. This was a fishnominal bite with many doubles and an abundance of strikes.

If you are planning an outing for 2012 there is no better time than now. Throngs of fish in a very well defined water column. Almost akin to fishing in a barrel. Here are the open dates for the rest of May: 15, 17, 21, 22, 23, 26, 28, 29, 30.
Fishtastically yours,
cap'n tony (the rodfather)
