Fishing Report #10

06/24/09

Hello, all my fishmongers:

And what a week of walleye fishing it has been! Limits the rule, rather than the exception. The morning bite has been outstanding on the little "o". In the day to day matchup of a bucktail jig dressed with a nightcrawler vs. the XPS Bass Pro Shops 1/2 oz. Lazer Blade gold/black, the blade out fishes the jig 3 to 1. What success I have had on the jig has been with the brown and yellow 3/4 oz. dressed with a nightcrawler.

Let's begin in reverse chronology. On Mon., June 22, Ken Varilek and son Allen, from PA met me at the dock at Fremac Waterfront at 7:30 A.M. and by 11:00 A.M. they boated 8 "eyes" to get their 6 keepers. All were taken on the Lazer Blade except for one "eye" on the brown and yellow jig.

On Father's Day, Lou and Debbie Santaro, Manlius, NY, and sons Nick and Anthony enjoyed a short 3 hr. outing for bass and pickerel. The boys had their first experience with spinning tackle and soft plastics. Here they are with a few of the fish they landed. In the foreground, you will notice the Senkos hooked "Whacky" style.

On Sat., June 20, Dr. Melodie Mayberry-Stewart, Albany, NY, Chief Information Officer for NYS (director: Office for Technology) applied her technical savvy and mastered the art of jigging. Although the weather left a bit to be desired the fishing left us fulfilled. We both boated our limits of "eyes" while jigging the Lazer Blades in 38 to 34 FOW just west of buoy 115. Again the "blade" reigned over the jig.

"Here comes the judge"!  Friday morning, June 19, judges for the town of Geddes and the village of Solvay, Jack Kinsella, Dan Mathews, and Tony Noce boated their limits of "eyes" mostly on the brown and yellow jig. I even contributed with one walleye and a couple perch. This catch occurred from 6:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. and again we were west of buoy 115 in 38 to 34 FOW.

On Tues. June 19, Corcoran tennis coach and former MLB player with the Chicago Cubs organization Don Churchill, treated his players to a walleye outing on Oneida lake. Perry Crain and Jeremy Harding both in the top 5% of their graduating class and headed to Syr. Univ. and Univ. of Rochester respectively on scholarships in math. ed. and Neurological Studies. They are recognized as Corcoran's best tennis doubles team in the school's history with an 11-2 record.  Here they  are with their and my limit of "eyes". Again the blade out fished the jig.

And for all you happy trollers, this Sat., June 27, The Mustad Challenge will take place at Oswego Marina. Registration is at the tackle shop (St. Peter's Outfitter) in the marina. You must be registered by 5:00 P.M.  on Friday. Hours of competition are from 5:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. This is a tournament based on a weigh-in of six fish (trout or salmon) no lakers, no Atlantics. You must be in the weigh-in line no later than 3:00 P.M. Once again chef Denny Ferris will cater the event with his generous platter of epicurean delights. For more details call (315) 345-6683.

If you are interested in a walleye charter, I have this coming Monday morning available as well as several days in the first half of July.

I don't know about you, but  "I like my fish with a little Mustad in their mouth,
